Timed to coincide with London Mining Week, this landmark meeting will celebrate 40 years on the Magnetics Society [formerly UK Magnetics Society]

The [UK] Magnetics Society was founded in 1986 following UK Government sponsored expert missions across the globe to work on emerging Neodymium Iron Boron magnets and significant advances in soft magnetic materials.

The UK Government provided a grant to support the Society for 2 years. The foundation ethos was to bring together Materials Science, Electrical Engineering and Physics professionals both from Industry and Academia.

The Magnetics Society is proud that 40 years later – we are still doing this; but it is the support of members, advertisers and conference attendees that finances our administration.

Across the day, we will explore supply-chain and technology themes including:

Rare-earth permanent magnet (REPM) supply resilience and what it means for UK/European capability
Recycling, circularity, and alternative technology pathways that reduce dependency and risk
The practical realities of scaling magnetic materials, processes, and manufacturing from innovation to volume deployment

The Ewing Lecture will be the highlight of the day; our distinguished speaker will be Constantine E. Karayannopoulos:

TRAVEL

By Car:

There is no parking available at the venue. If you are travelling by car, the closest car park is Q Park Soho It is a 10 minute walk from the venue.

By Train:

Charing Cross is the closest train station at a 10 minute drive or a 10 minute walk. From Charing Cross walk South West along the Strand, down onto The Mall Street. Prince Philip House is on the right after the Institute of Contemporary Arts. You can get to the entrance by walking between the two buildings and onto Charlton House Terrace.

London Paddington is a 20 minute taxi ride from the venue and a 1 hour walk.

By Tube:

From London Paddington you can take the Bakerloo line to Piccadilly Circus. You will then need to take a short walk south on St Regent’s Street St James’s and then a right onto Carlton House Terrace.

Other close by Tube stations include Trafalgar Square. From the tube station walk South West along The Strand, down onto The Mall Street. Prince Philip House is on the right after the Institute of Contemporary Arts. You can get to the entrance by walking between the two buildings and onto Charlton House Terrace.

By Plane

London City Airport is the closest accessible airport to the Venue. Alternatively, London Heathrow is the most accessible airport. You can travel on the Tube to one of the closest tube stations to reach the venue as per the above.

Ewing Lecture
by Constantine Karyannopoulous of

Constantine Karayannopoulos is President of Kloni Inc., a company providing advisory services to global clients in the critical materials space. Constantine’s executive roles have included three CEO terms; two terms as CEO of Neo Performance Materials (“Neo”), 2005-2012 and 2020-2023 as well as one as interim CEO of Molycorp Inc. Constantine started the Rare Earth phase of his career in 1993 as one of the founders of Advanced Material Resources (“AMR”) in Toronto, when he helped negotiate AMR’s two rare earth processing joint venture acquisitions in China. In 2005, after AMR’s acquisition of Magnequench (a private US company which invented the RE/NdFeB magnet in 1982 with Asian production of rare earth metals, alloys, magnetic powders and magnets), Constantine became CEO of the combined company renamed Neo Material Technologies. In July 2020, following the departure of its CEO, Neo’s board and its largest shareholder asked Constantine to take over as CEO. and EV/Wind Power magnet production, acquiring SG Technologies, a leading UK rare earth magnet and component manufacturer in May 2023 and breaking ground at Neo’s new 2,000 tonne/year magnetic alloys and magnet plant in Estonia in June 2023, Constantine retired again in July 2023 Mr. Karayannopoulos is a member of the Advisory Board of the University of Toronto’s Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, a Director of the Canada-China Business Council and on the board of advisors of Lithium Royalty Corp, a TSX-listed merchant bank specializing in technology and energy transition investments.

Permanent magnet supply security for SMEs – a work in progress

ITK Precisioning GmbH builds high-precision 3D motion platforms for the semiconductor and life science sectors, where permanent magnets are critical to both drive systems and measurement technology. Since late 2025, persistent supply chain disruptions have forced us to act. This presentation shares the mitigation strategies we have pursued – in collaboration with fellow SMEs through the INNOMAG and Magnetics Society networks – covering sourcing, stockpiling, and material substitution. Our supply chain has been stabilised, but structural vulnerabilities remain. A frank account of what has worked, what hasn't, and what still needs to change.

Challenge of Recycling

Pushing the boundaries in hybrid and electric vehicle technology

The YASA topology was first introduced to the academic community in 2007 through Dr Woolmer’s DPhil research. Since then, the technology has advanced significantly, both in its underlying engineering principles and in its successful industrialisation. Most notably, YASA machines are now widely deployed in high-performance hybrid and electric vehicles, enabling new powertrain architectures, reducing vehicle mass, and improving overall system efficiency. This presentation will explore some of the exciting applications of the technology and the challenges that were overcome for its successful industrialisation.
